the educational march in Athens

Announcement for the events of the educational march and the fights in front of the parliament
22/2/07
Greece, Athens

An educational march organised by all the occupied university departments of Greece took place in Athens on the 22nd of February, the same moment that the parliament was discussing the educational reforms that will demolish the public education. We were part of this demonstration and we were together with all of the students who decided to clash with the repression forces of the state which formed a “red zone” in the city centre of Athens and especially around the parliament protecting the ones who decide for our lives but without us.
Our choice was made in the context of the radical educational struggles in order to symbolize, both on theoretical and in practical levels, the announced and clear decision of the students to refuse any dialogue with the authority of the state. The authority presented the new law for the educational reforms now that the student¢s movement is on its peak and by this the authority revealed its real face, the one of zero tolerance. Our action is based on the political perception that the real politics take place on the streets and not in the parliament. The street politics, where the simple people move and live, constitute the pragmatic and creative spectrum of the people and they are versus the ballot-box and the parliament which express the goals and the interests of the governors.
All of us who were present since the beginning of June on the path of struggle against the new reform law and against the reformation of the article 16 of the constitution, and of course against the whole framework of the reforms which are in favour of capitalism and the so-called security and order, we are known and we have a public face as we take part in all the procedures of the student¢s movement. Whoever want to know our goals and our intentions will find us in the amphitheatres of the university departments where we express our ideas and on the streets where we make them action.
Our vision for a free education, an education devoid from the state and the private capital, is clashing on the plans of the government for a neoliberal education in the service of the big business, the competition of the global “free-market”, and in the arms of the repression forces.
For us the fight for accomplishing to give a new meaning about the essence of the university asylum as a place of freedom and the fight for a Public, Free and Social University will transform the fake dilemma of state or private University into the pragmatic and really essential dilemma: FREEDOM or CAPITALISM! People who resist or subjects who follow the orders of the authority!

PS1: Our comrade Gerasimos Papaioannou, student of the department of Physics of the Ioannina University, was in the safeguarding of the march, together with hundreds of students, and he was arrested the moment that they were protecting the march from the assault of the praetorian riot police of Mr. Polidoras (Minister of Public Order). He was brutally beaten moved in the police headquarters and afterwards to the hospital where he is guarded by riot police
PS2: Later, the same day, a march in solidarity to Gerasimos was organised towards the police headquarters. The march was attacked by the praetorians and split into a lot of small parts. At least two students were taken to the hospital in bad condition, and the riot cops chased the students towards Exarchia square, where they attempted to invade the social centre “Nosotros” and they arrested one more person.
