2006 G8 Summit in St.Petersburg

Network Against the G8 English info bulletin #2

This bulletin is prepared by some members of Moscow group of Network Against G8 (SPB8). It is result of common discussions in inter-regional meeting of 28th of May 2006 between St. Petersburg group of Network Against G8, St. Petersburg League of Anarchists, Punk Revival, FrontAIDS, Indymedia, Indyvideo, Legal-team, Medical group, AFA St. Petersburg and individual activists, but bulletin does not necessarily reflect opinions of all members of the network. We will publish new issues as soon as there is something to tell. Please distribute it widely!

Legal support

Legal team will be supported not by anarchists alone, but by efforts of Youth Human Rights Movement (MPD) and ecological organization "Groza" (Thunderstorm). A flat will be rented in St. Petersburg for legal group, and there will be a contact telephone in time of the events. 6 activists have already promised to volunteer, but a lawyer is also searched in order to make access to arrested more easily. Booklets on legal and practical information are prepared (you may read electronic English versions in SPB8 website). During June, there will be legal trainings for activists on legal questions in St. Petersburg and Moscow.

Network Against G8 info-point in St, Petersburg

There will be an info-point by Network Against G8 activists in Kirov stadium, where Russian Social Forum will take place. Kirov stadium is located in metro station "Krestovskiy Ostrov"; it is about 10 minutes by feet through a park. It is easy to find, but we will publish a map in site later on. In Kirov stadium, you should find a room, tent or stand with text "NAG8". Stadium will be open for people from 12th to 16th of July. Whoever wants to come more early, should contact organizers in time. We hope that we will also manage to set up info-points that will work more early.

Accommodation during summit

There are a number of alternatives for accommodation during the summit.

  1. Kirov stadium - if you want to stay there, bring your tents, mattresses and sleeping bags. Russian Social Forum (RSF) has promised some tents, but there is nothing we may say about their quantity and quality. Ascetics may live without tents, as in Stadium there are corridors under tribunes, where one is protected from a rain. Organizational committee of RSF has promised to organize field kitchens for affordable food in Stadium, as well as a list of cafes nearby. Stadium has electricity, toilets and showers.
  2. St. Petersburg group of Network Against G8 has an alternative camping site in city area with a limited amount of spaces. You should contact group in case you are interested of this option.
  3. You may also set up your own camp beyond city limits, as vast majority of the forests have not been enclosed yet and thus are public land where you have a right to stay with certain conditions. Locals may help you in setting up such a camp in case Network Against G8 site is full or you have some other reasons to have your own camp.
  4. Local activists in St. Petersburg are prepared to help if you want to book a hotel, hostel or rent a flat for a few days (latter option is often cheaper than hotels for a bigger group of people). Cheapest places in hotels cost 350-600 rubles (10-19 euros) for a night, many places demand that you pay in prior. We may also provide a list of hotels, write to contact addresses in end of this bulletin.

Media-space

It is quite likely, that inside Stadium there will be a media space, accessible for everyone. But number of computers and access to internet and even telephone are still a question. There are other media-center projects, but these are unlikely to be open for everybody. Organizational committee of Social Forum in St. Petersburg promises to provide information about cheap internet cafes close to stadium and around the city, as well as other alternatives for people who want to do media.

General demonstration in St. Petersburg

General demonstration of "opposition" is planned to take place 15th of July. Route of demonstration is still under discussion (there are two alternatives - long march of 8 kilometers and short march of 3 kilometers). It will finish to a square next to cruiser Aurora. This is as close as it is possible to legally approach the city center, which according to authorities will be closed from demonstrations. To this demonstration, political parties (Communist Party of Russian Federation KPRF, Russian Workers Communist Party, Yabloko party) and "oppositional" political movements (such Union of Coordinatory Councils and various Komsomol organizations) are expected to take part. Committee of Russian Social Forum excluded participation of far right organizations and National Bolshevik Party, but it is possible that they may appear, as there are nationalists in St. Petersburg part of the Russian Social Forum organization, and KPRF was lately open to cooperation with far-right Movement Against Illegal Immigration (DPNI). Anarchists are splinted on question of participation to this demonstration; one proposition is to organize an anarchist block which would strikingly differ from all the rest.

Outreach

It has been proposed that stickers should be the major way of outreaching to the public, as they are safer than putting up posters or painting with stencils. However one poster is currently being printed and others are currently being made. There are few alternatives for stickers. Besides these, a special issue of journal "Avtonom" is currently being prepared, as well as a booklet of guidelines for activists. Currently main site is www.spb8.net. Site nog8.ru is currently not developed, but you may find half of the Russian translation of the book "We are everywhere" there.

Street medics

Street medic group organized a number of meetings and trainings for activists, and also prepared a text of guidelines for giving first aid. It is planned that trainings will continue.

Libertarian forum in Moscow, 8th-12th of July

A preliminary program of libertarian forum is ready, currently we expect some 70 activists from various regions of Russia to take part, 30-50 from Moscow and few dozen foreigners. Both forum premises and accommodation will be in Moscow region close to Moscow. Take sleeping bags and mattresses with you. We may also book hotels, cheapest places are 600 rubles (24$) a night. Food not Bombs has promised to feed the conference; we will also prepare a list of affordable cafes. There will not be fixed price for participation, we suggest that people will contribute to costs of the event according to their capacities. Unless you have an agreement with organizers to pick you up from somewhere, you should come to office of Movement for Human Rights (Dvizhenie za Prava Cheloveka), located to Maliy Kislovskiy pereulok, dom (house) 7, stroenie (building) 1, metro station Arbatskaya. A map to find the location will be available later on. From here, you will be directed to premises of the forum and accommodation. We will wait you here 7th and 8th of July from noon to 8 PM. In case you are coming earlier, contact organizers by e-mail or by phone. 12th of July we have planned a press-conference of participators of the conference - main theme will be critic against energy policies of G8 summit and renaissance of atomic energy. We are discussing an alternative to travel collectively to St. Petersburg with a rented bus. Contacts: moscow_protiv_g8atriseup.net.

Russian Social Forum in St. Petersburg 13th-15th of July

27th of May there was a meeting of organizational committee of RSF, which witnessed a number of disagreements among the organizers on important questions, such as on cooperation with parties and nationalists. St. Petersburg part of the organizational committee includes several coalitions, which include parties and nationalist activists, and many "leftists" may not imagine their activities outside party coalition. Thus a compromise decision was made, where forum will take place without political parties, and demonstration in 15th of July - together with political parties. Nationalist organizations will be excluded from forum and demonstration, but it is possible that some of them will show up anyway as individuals. Forum will include at least sections on housing, energy, health care and civil rights, and one is free to propose additional themes. One may find more information about Russian Social Forum from http://ikd.ru/Campaign/RSF

Wake up and Smell the Greenwash PDF Print E-mail

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE GREENWASH

Last year the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change announced that by 2050 ‘a million species could
face extinction'! In the same year Tony Blair publicly
announced that cutting carbon dioxide emissions was
‘essential to ‘avert disaster'' yet recently leaked
documents reveal that the UK government was
simultaneously attempting ‘to remove targets that
would reduce carbon dioxide emissions during
high-level meetings to formulate Europe's climate
policy' (The Independent, 16.01.05). IT'S A SHAM, a
facade, an act, a rip-off, a con, a trick ... Tony Blair
is the Greenwash Guru, arguing that market
environmentalism and the Kyoto Protocol will save the
day. A Protocol, lets remember, which is not only a
flawed method of reducing CO˛ emissions but involves
turning the atmosphere into a giant commodity to be
bought and sold like barrels of oil by traders,
governments and corporations, further deepening the
world's already gaping imbalances of power and not
even effectively reducing emissions into the bargain!

A more realistic picture of Tony goes something like
this ... he pedals a government that annually invests
₤40 million into research projects that are of
direct benefit to the fossil fuel industry, has
recently given the green light to a ₤5.5 billion
road building programme, the biggest for two decades
and his own Environment Agency has invested ‘₤64
million in oil firms [BP and Shell] that have been
condemned for contributing to flooding and climate
change' (The Independent, 07.01.03).

At the 2005 G8 summit we can unite in our opposition
to climate chaos and the capitalist system creating
it, our commitment to direct action and civil
disobedience as the most effective form of struggle.
Not only that, we can build a European Climate Justice
Network that can look beyond the G8 Summit and Blair's
‘leadership' of the EU and begin to challenge the
global capitalist system, which has led us to the
brink of climate chaos on a scale never before seen by
human eyes. Solutions to this problem will not come
from career path politicians or oil executives but
from the bottom up, from the grassroots, from us.

Bristol Dissent Group Report PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 March 2005

Bristol report:

1. Group makeup

We've had 4 meetings so far, with attendance between 18 & 40 people. There is a mix of old hands and new, which has generated some useful new networks. One of the features of the group is that just about everyone is involved in one (usually several more) existing campaigns/networks/activities - anti-war, anti-GM, Bristle mag, international solidarity, Kebele, squatting, people & planet, Bristol Indymedia, art, DA, and so on. Everyone is busy - in recent weeks there have in Bristol been actions/events relating to Palestine, Zapatistas, Columbia, Buy nothing day, army recruitment, domestic violence, film nights etc etc. On 10 & 11 Dec there were 2 big benefits (fundraising for anti-war, Colombian Solidarity, Bristol Dissent, and Circus2Iraq) that group activists were involved in, that raised over ₤3500 in total.

2. Group activity so far

The group has publicly published it's aims, supported the PGA hallmarks, leafleted various events/held info stalls, produced some painted banners, held two stencil/art workshops, and organised a Bristol Dissent benefit. Monthly street stalls are planned for the new year. We are also starting to plan a (regional) education/training dayschool in March, with benefit in the evening. There is active interest in CIRCA (a member lives in Bristol). Around 20 people so far have pledged to take part next July in Scotland, others may do stuff in Bristol. A few people may make it to Scotland well before to help out. Some of our group are involved in the national Indymedia gathering next year in Bristol (March time).

3. Sub-groups

We have 2 main sub-groups. The info/research group (and individuals) have so far produced 3 propaganda flyers, an ‘Intro to the G8' factsheet, a list of websites for info/resources, and some poster designs are on their way. Other factsheets on climate change, Africa/debt, sustainability, the WB/IMF/WTO, and PFI should be ready in the new year. We also have an experienced local community film-maker working on a film proposal on the G8 and related issues

The events/outreach group has also been busy (see 1 & 2 above).

Police to stand trial over violance at G8 summit in Genoa PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 March 2005
Yesterday saw the preliminary opening of The Diaz/Bolzaneto Trial at the main Genoa Tribunal. The first Group of 29 police officers from the diaz raid, are to be tried first. The 44 police plus three doctors from bolzaneto are to be tried as the Diaz case finishes.

The day dawned a bright blue sky over Genoa much like the saturday almost three years ago when the Diaz raid happened during the G8 summit in July 2001. Outside the court about 100 police were only allowing victims and their lawyers inside after heavy searches and ID checks.

Downstairs in the basement, over 60 lawyers, 40 victims and roughly 15 of the accused police took their seats in what has been nicknamed "the Bunker". The atmosphere could be cut with a knife with the Diaz victims surrounded by the accused cops looking at each other with much hate, anger and very intensive emotion. In a sense, being one of the victims, I realised the gulf between the government and the italian left was as wide as ever with no compromise in between. not that any compromises were being sought by either side anyway.

Although no evidence was going to be presented or heard, this first hearing was fundamental to both sides. On our side, our lawyers worked hard and succeeded in allowing the trial to continue. the police lawyers, who were dressed in Gucci "mafia" suits that must of cost a 1000 euros, tried in vain to state that because a primary witness who has been involved in a car crash, the trial should be stopped or suspended.

The primary witness involved was the policeman who had found the molotov cocktails on the friday before the raid. the statement of this policeman has indicted 19 police officers on conspiracy to plant false evidence to incriminate the Diaz victims and lying to the prosecutors in a cover-up. The personal views from some us was that it was very convenient and timely for the witness to end up in a coma after a "car crash" two days before the trial started. A friend later told me that it is a tradition in italy for car accidents to be "arranged"!

The Judge refused to stop or postpone the trial and instead seperated the witness from the case to allow the trial to continue. One police lawyer objected several times to the point of punching his fist on the table, making a loud noise while "shouting" at the judge. The Judge refused to hear the objection for the second time and overruled him.

The next tactic was to inform the judge that they were seeking a "judicial review" of one of the charges with the hope of delaying the trial whilst the review was heard ( what they are trying to do is what berlusconi did, which is when charged, to change the law before you are convicted). The judge refused to allow the "judicial review" application and the trial was allowed to continue. the rest of the day was taken up submitting "final power of attorney" documents on both sides and the judge examining the documents to see that they were complete and to proceedure.

trying to get a translation of what was going on was hard and difficult for the victims of the Diaz. this problem i expect to continue.

Meanwhile, not many of italian media turned up and much of the coverage today was pro-police and berlusconi biased. The Guardian newspaper did put in an appearance and tried to balance this with a good piece. the BBC stayed away thinking that a BBC wildlife program was more important to do than the Diaz case. Newsnight's editor also decided that yet another George Bush pronouncement a Blair health policy was more important than reminding the British public of what happened during the G8 in 2001

The court finished at 4pm and after a short banner demonstration outside in front of the media, we all decided to return to the Diaz school to come to terms with what had happened there three years ago. for myself, this was my third visit to Diaz and my fifth to Genoa. my life almost ended at the Diaz and since it has always been hard to return. for many, it was for the first time returning to a place of such total pain, shock, terror and horror. my nightmares are of the screams. For others it was dark images of cops batoning them or close friends. for a small group, it was particularly stressful because the nature of their injuries gave them post traumatic stress disorder to a high level. Afterward we all met up for a dinner at a famous and well known resturant called "Mario's"

After the Diaz raid, what was so cruel was that we all had to go through an endurance battle to stay alive, despite our injuries (and no help from their citizen governments they belong to) whilst the lawyers prepared the case. most have been reduced to living below the poverty line with no chance of ever working again. the police who have been charged enjoyed promotion, wages and public standing and have not suffered at all yet.

As for the politicians responsible for the raid, none have been brought to trial or even questioned by the prosecutors. this is not to say the prosecutors have tried and, indeed they are under alot of pressure not to question the politicians involved. Another issue that troubled all of us was the presence of two members of parliament who were working as lawyers on the police side. their names are La Rossa from the (fascist) National Alliance Party and Biondi from Forza Italia. we are also asking our lawyers to research the possiblity that the National Alliance has made large "donations" the police legal fund because the lawyers appear to be very well funded.
